College of the Redwoods is thrilled to announce an installation of artwork exploring the complex topic of housing in Humboldt County by local artist James Adam Taylor in the Floyd Bettiga Gallery on College of the Redwoods’ new Creative Arts Complex.
Comprised of original photographs and audio compositions, Humboldt Housing Project gathers stories and voices from our community into one location, in order to prompt conversation about our home, our community, equity, and society.
Over the course of several years, Taylor has built a picture of our community through photos, interviews, and interactions. His work documents great need, and also solutions that are slow moving, but which are moving nonetheless. The project aims to humanize- rather than to other- diverse members of our community, while examining the complexities of planning, zoning, and the public process. Through his work, Taylor hopes to help community members understand the pros and cons of various possible housing futures, starting today, for tomorrow.
While building the exhibition, Taylor was required to vacate his affordable-to-him home of nearly a decade and had his own experience of housing insecurity. Seeing first-hand how housing insecurity makes every other aspect of life much more difficult gave the artist additional depth of understanding in his conversations with other community members, and informed his work for the show.
James Adam Taylor is a Humboldt County-based photographer and the driving force behind Uncoded Studio, and organization that helps artists and photographers make high quality prints of their work. Taylor's artwork develops senses of place and addresses landscape, environmental,
and social issues. Taylor is a Graduate of the Rowan University Fine Arts program Glassboro, NJ, where he studied photography and printmaking. He apprenticed with photographer Jon Lowenstein in Chicago, learning how observation and patience can lead to moments of connection. Since 2015 Taylor has displayed works regularly within Humboldt County and has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions.
Humboldt Housing Project is funded through the generous support of Humboldt County Association of Governments and a REAP Grant.
